Indie animator Bill Plympton’s newest animated feature film, a morally ambiguous man spends his days at a dead-end job and his nights in an unfriendly dive bar. And then, one morning, everything changes. Adopting a darkly humorous approach to absence of dialogue takes some getting used to, but the sound effects and an excellent soundtrack keep the viewer involved. The story follows Angel, whose selfish attitude is cruelly thrown in his face when he wakes up one morning with angel wings sprouting out of his back. The wings, which he removes several times, keep growing back and force him to perform good deeds, even though his brain is wired otherwise. The result is an imaginative and thought-provoking internal battle, externalized Along the way a doctor that Angel goes to for help and the bar owner, Bart, all have designs on the wings. Bart finally gets the upper hand but all is not lost as the battle rages on. Filled with Plympton's trademark weirdness and visual fluidity, Idiots and Angels is a surreal masterpiece. More...
